For all the run-of-the-mill spots, there are the absolute gems which tick all the boxes, culminating in a trip highlight, rather than just a place to stay. It was just an average day in Europe. There we were, ‘speeding’ along the Autobahn in our rented Smart car during the hour and a half journey from Innsbruck, Austria back to our housesit in the Bavarian mountains. 5 June marked our 400th day on the road – it has been over a year now since we started traveling and while time has flown by, those first few days of nomadic freedom also seem a lifetime away from where we are now (which is Lisbon, Portugal, by the way!)

Except for the odd discordance of hearing Christmas songs while wearing sunscreen and flip-flops, the Christmas ‘season’ has pretty much passed us by this year. No Amazon deliveries, no online (or offline) purchases, no standing in line at the post office outraged at the price of shipping, no wrapping up pretty boxes with even prettier little bows. It has been a truly capitalism-free Christmas.
