The 7 links project: 7 posts from our archives

Last Updated on July 20, 2022

We were recently nominated to take part in the 7 Links project by Nicole and Cameron, the Traveling Canucks. The project was started by Tripbase, with the goal being ‘to unite bloggers (from all sectors) in a joint endeavor to share lessons learned and create a bank of long but not forgotten blog posts that deserve to see the light of day again’.

So we dug deep into our archives and came up with these seven posts:

1. Our most beautiful post: Cycling along Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast
We chose this as our most beautiful post to date because we felt that the images and the story were both put together well. Plus, the day we spent cycling along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast and hitting several beaches along the way was one of the most relaxing and refreshing beach days we’ve had, so it is definitely worth it to share this post again with anyone who missed it the first time around.

2. Our most popular post: Mexican Street Food, we miss you!
This Ode to Mexican food was by far our most popular post to date. It was written from the heart, as we absolutely LOVE Mexican street food, which we found to be surprisingly different to the Tex-Mex food we had always known. To this day we continue to dream of Flautas, Gringas, Tostadas and Tacos and it seems that plenty of other people out there felt the same!

Mexican Street Food3. Our most controversial post: Organized Mayan village trips – Tourism or Trespassing?
We don’t tend to write many controversial posts, and we only focus on the negative aspects of our travels when we think our experience can help others avoid the same mess. This is why we had to slam, or at least vent about, these Mayan village tours near San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico. The tours go against everything we believe in, and it turns out, many people felt the same!

4. Our most helpful post: How to combine long-term travel and work

We put this post out some time ago now, but we still believe that if this post can help anyone start to imagine the idea of a digital nomad lifestyle, then this is our most helpful post. The two of us have never been happier than since we took our life on the road, and we continue to be more motivated each day because we love what we do and the freedom we have to work where and when we like.

Our site tends to be more information/destination-focused, so when we sit down to write, we usually focus on crafting strong, well-informed travel tales. We were very surprised to see just how many people were interested in what we missed from home when we were traveling through Central America! It was awesome to be able to commiserate with fellow long-term travelers about all those little things you crave after spending such a long time on the road.

6. A post we feel didn’t get the attention it deserved: Leon’s no gem, and that is what we love about it
We spent two weeks in Leon, Nicaragua this year, and we immediately felt at home here. The mix between grit and style, passion and laid-back lifestyle drew us in and in this post, we went into great deal describing just what we loved and a list of what to see and do in Leon. For whatever reason, not many people read this one, so we’d love to see it get a second wind, and maybe inspire a few more people to head to Leon!

7. The post that we are most proud of: Travel in Mexico: Safe or Not
Before we set off on our travels, nearly everyone warned us not to visit Mexico – don’t you know how unsafe it is there? You two must be crazy, so many people said. In reality, most of Mexico is perfectly safe, culturally fascinating, and home to some of the most mouthwatering cuisine we have yet to taste. Media coverage of Mexico, however, continues to be overwhelmingly focused on the negative. We were very proud of this post because not only did it add at least one more positive article on Mexico to the inter-webs, but it also started a great conversation about the wonders of Mexico, and maybe, just maybe, encouraged a few people to spend time getting to know Mexico.
