Our temporary home is not far from the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal which connects Ottawa with the town of Kingston on Lake Ontario. The Canal was opened in 1832 and is the oldest continuous waterway in North America. There are 45 locks along the canal and we took our bicycles out for a long ride to the Burritts Rapids locks near Merrickville, where we enjoyed a picnic in the sun while watching boats come and go.

I've heard Ottawa has a reputation for being quite an expensive city although I've met a few others who have found it charming. What was your take?

Ottawa is definitely charming - not quite the indie culture of Toronto, but it's a nice city and there's a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do around there - hiking in the Gatineau Park, cycling along the Rideau Canal, and with the Jazz festival and Blues festival the city has a lot to offer. It's definitely not cheap though, but neither was Toronto and I don't think Montreal or Quebec City (which we have yet to visit) are cheaper.

That's cool... I haven't been to Ottawa but it's on my list of places to check out.

Ottawa is much better than its reputation! :)
