Monterosso al Mare is one of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre, the ‘Five Lands’ on a small stretch of coast in Northern Italy. Even though the little villages are usually overrun by tour groups, it is still possible to explore the charming villages ‘off the main path’ and stroll through the steep and narrow lanes all by yourself, admiring the old Italian buildings and chat to the locals who take great pride in decorating their houses, door sills and window shutters with colorful flowers and potted plants.
