You’ve seen the commercials, read the articles, and heard from friends and family. But is Southern California as amazing as everyone says?
The truth is Southern California – or SoCal for short – is not some magical realm removed from reality. There’s petty crime, constant traffic, and an ongoing housing shortage, just to name a few less than ideal aspects. However, SoCal also has so much to offer.
Take Advantage of the Mild Climate
From San Diego to San Luis Obispo, there is something inherently alluring about the weather in Southern California. Mild even during the winter months, it’s the kind of climate that allows for outdoor physical recreation all year. Take a drive up the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, and marvel at all of the magnificent homes in Malibu. Don’t be surprised if you see a few celebrities sprinkled into the general population here. Those craving a Woodstock vibe will want to see Topanga Canyon, the artistic home of so many musical legends.
Visit the Birthplace of the Entertainment Industry
Speaking of legends — and the movie business — Hollywood has been cranking out the hits for over a century now. All those years ago, the mavericks of the motion picture industry saw that Southern California would be uniquely positioned to serve their business. The aforementioned lovely climate allowed producers and directors to shoot their projects year-round, which was perfect for the burgeoning medium.
Embrace New Experiences
Is show business not your thing? If so, there are many other hands on experience opportunities across SoCal covering topics like design, music, and writing. To visit Los Angeles and San Diego is to immerse yourself in its creative culture. These days, even online content creators set up shop in SoCal to be taken seriously. In Hollywood, popular influencers flock to certain houses and apartment buildings to build their brands. Meanwhile, they are just a short drive away from Paramount Studios and other legendary venues. In a world so often defined by its entertainment, Southern California continues to welcome tastemakers and other visionaries.
Wine Safaris? Goat Yoga? SoCal Has It All
There is an eclectic spirit that dominates the landscape of SoCal. Animal lovers particularly will delight in all of the opportunities to get up close and personal with some of their favorite creatures. In Malibu alone, wine tasting and animal watching can be done in the same location. Whether visitors want to stare at giraffes or take a yoga class featuring only Drake songs, Southern California is the place that makes it all possible.
Take a Hike or Hang Ten: You Won’t Regret It
For those who love to get physical, SoCal is the perfect place to be. Famous for its solid stretches of shoreline, the hiking opportunities here are pretty much unparalleled. Take a jaunt down to Rancho Palos Verdes and walk along the water, or take a surfing class in Santa Monica. From paddleboarding to biking, you’ll be able to rent equipment pretty much everywhere you go. And no trip to Los Angeles would be complete without a hike up Runyon Canyon, which is the perfect place to spot your favorite celebs going incognito.
Enjoy the Cuisine
SoCal is a marvelous melting pot, with many cultures coming together, so perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that there are many wonderful cuisines to be had here. The late L.A. food writer Jonathan Gold once said, “When it’s done properly, taco should be a verb.” Indeed, there is an abundance of fantastic taco trucks and Mexican eateries in SoCal. But that’s far from all there is; from Thai food to Korean BBQ, and beyond, there’s a reason why L.A. has become famous for fusion. Also, vegans and vegetarians will be thrilled by all of the enticing options here. From Inn of the Seventh Ray to Gracias Madre, this area is known for its fantastic menus.
A Museum Lover’s Dream
The museums offer another extraordinary reason to visit SoCal. Those who are fascinated by car culture are encouraged to visit the Petersen Automotive Museum. Pop right across the street to visit LACMA and the L.A. Tar Pits – a location famous for its dinosaur fossils. For those seeking a more scenic experience, making an appointment at the Getty Villa in Malibu is a must. Ancient Greek and Roman statues abound. Across town, the Getty Museum is perched upon a hill overlooking the entire city. Filled with an exciting assortment of artwork from all over the world, this building practically bursts with beauty. It’s the perfect symbol for an area that openly admires a bit of decadence and wants to welcome in as much artistic expression as possible.
