Polaroid of the week: Spices of India

polaroid of the week india goa spice shopWalking through the streets of any town in India, our noses were bombarded by a glorious onslaught of smells coming out of restaurants and homes along the way. Indian food is some of the most flavorful in the world, filled with tasty spices native to the sub-continent, so we spent our time discovering the explosions of flavor from cardamon, cumin, turmeric, coriander and cinnamon. Little spice shops on the side of the road sell heaps of spices, and we definitely wanted to visit spice farms in Goa. We didn’t get to do it this time around, but there are really countless spice farms to visit to go see how these tasty ingredients grow.

Indian food is not as spicy as we had thought, at least not in terms of burn-your-tongue spicy. Although we missed the burn, every time we tried a new dish, our mouths filled up with such an amazing variety of flavors, leaving us ooh-ing and aah-ing and smiling and trying to guess the recipe.

i like the indian food its based on rich flavors, there are many big spice markets mostly in every state of India. i visited one in Delhi called khari boli. the air was filled with all kind of spices. it was a great experience.

Yessss I am getting so excited to visit India now, my visa is being processed as I type. I love Chai Tea and am really looking forward to Indulging in that and a vast variety of the dishes there. I am glad they are not all mouth burning hot because I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to that, Cheers for the blog

Don't worry - Indian food's not too spicy and there are so many options and different things to try. Have fun!

I have had Thalis and loved them, when travelling, but they are not available where I live. I may have to request one at our local curry place, and see what they say.

I love making my own vegetable pakhoras. But I really love getting a taste of a whole lot of dishes. An Indian Smorgasboard I guess you could say!

Jan - We also like sampling a whole lot of dishes, which is why we love Indian Thalis. That's rice, bread and several curries and sauces, and sometimes even a dessert. Yummy :)
