Polaroid of the week: Old school transportation in Leon, Nicaragua

Last Updated on March 23, 2021

..

The streets of Nicaragua are filled with all kinds of transportation – cars, buses, bikes, bici-taxis, and the covered pick-up truck stuffed with locals. No form of transportation is as near to our hearts, however, as the horse-drawn carriage. These are not over-priced tourist rides around Central Park. Whether the ‘drivers’ are cowboys, workers or entire families, not an hour  goes by without seeing horses proudly and equally sharing the streets with cars and buses.

Seems like the streets of Nicaragua are cultural heritage! Seeing horse-drawn carriages is like going back to the time of European colonists where horses are a symbol of social stature. I treasure moments in my life like this and talking with the locals will certainly augment the experience.

Gotta love it!!! Don't you wish we saw more things like that at home?

Ha! It would be quite a scene to see these horse-drawn carts on the highway going about 10mph! In a way though, I am glad that this is so unfamiliar, as it makes us appreciate it even more for its uniqueness. Thanks for stopping by!

Clever usage of a truck chassis!

Oh how I miss this, many of the neighborhood trash collections actually use horses. The idea of the big trash trucks just doesn't exist there.

It's amazing how many horse carriages there actually are! And the kind of things they transport in them!! Everything from entire families, trash, furniture, fruit & vegetables... and the people are always friendly - waving at us and smiling for the camera :) We will miss them when we leave Leon today - but hopefully there will be more in the other towns we'll visit.
