I went on the same swamp tour with Captain Mike last year! It seems he's always got a baby alligator with him - it was kind of cool to hold it. Not as cool as seeing the swamps, though. They were an amazing place.

Nice write-up! A lot of people often confuse the term Creole, although it has often been thought of exclusively as mixed race descendants, which is also accurate. I've always found the history there very intoxicating. I remember when I first moved to Baton Rouge a number of years ago, I would spend many weekends diving into the culture of New Orleans or around the Cajun towns, up and down the
Atchafalaya basin at all the festivals - and every one has the same great food - and lots of Zydeco music.

When you go back, you should check out Barataria Preserve - it's part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve - the French Quarter is 1 of 4 pieces. Barataria is just south of New Orleans across the river - probably a 30 minute drive - they have foot paths that you can walk on through the cypress swamp, and you can see birds and maybe gators. If it's the right time of year, you'll see them often swimming in some of the canals or lying low in the swamp for a possible heron to come by.

It was kinda surreal how alligators started to show up around our boat as if it was nothing :) Definitely recommend taking a swamp tour - it's so beautiful out in the bayou.

I had never seen houses like that in the U.S. either! Some of the houses in New Orleans were built on small stilts, but nothing comparable to that - so high up! Not sure how I'd feel about living in a house like that ;-)

The Bayou tour sounds amazing! When I was in NOLA for a conference I unfortunately didn't have the time. Next time :) I did get to see some alligators up close in the zoo. They have a pretty nice "local exhibit", so that was neat. Not the same though of course...

Aw thanks Rease. We were super relaxed. The sand here was absolutely powder thin, white, and we could lay out for hours (if it weren't for the extreme heat!).

Hi Andi - if you are ever in Penang, this is a great place for you to stay, seriously. You got it right, it was all in the details. Everywhere you looked, there was another detail you hadn't noticed before! :-)
