A quick getaway to the Algarve, Portugal

The following is a guest post by Amy Baker, who recently visited the Algarve coast in Portugal – the country that we are on our way to tomorrow!
After a hard few months of putting in crazy amounts of hours at work, I wanted nothing more to get out of London on a quick getaway with three simple ingredients – sun, sea and sand. That’s how I found myself aboard the short flight to Algarve, Portugal armed with my bikini, suntan lotion, an Algarve hotel guide and a list of recommendations as long as my arm for where to enjoy some of their famous fresh seafood.
Which Algarve hotel to choose? As I was traveling solo, I thought that it would be nice to keep things cheap and meet some people to share a drink (or ten) with. For this reason I opted for the youth hostel rich area of Lagos. Not only is this town lively but it is also has a beach within walking distance, charming ancient streets to explore when the sun starts to set and the choice of a million activities to choose from.
Mornings for me were strictly reserved for ‘me time’. My book, a coffee and some sweet Portuguese tasty treat. Each afternoon, I was itching for something more adrenaline fueled – the options in the Algarve are endless.
The Algarve coastline is perfect for abseiling (lowering yourself down the side of a cliff – safely!) no matter how experienced you are. Top spots for abseiling and rock climbing are Sagres and Rocha de Pena. I opted for Sagres, where, after abseiling down the cliff, there are plenty of surf spots to test my skills out on the water. I clearly wasn’t born with the surfing gene, however, so I stuck with abseiling for the cure to my adventure bug.
Another more relaxing option was to head out snorkeling, and the area of Lagos is a great spot for snorkeling, as are Alvos and Praia de Luz.
From total adventure, to ultimate relaxation, my trip to the Algarve was a truly healing experience. I returned from the Algarve recuperated, well-rested and tan. Perfect.

Hmm 3 Monate Algarve would do us very well, especially after the 3 days hike through the Andes and the silver mining tour in Potosi. We are too old for that!!!!

Hey guys – had we planned ahead more I think we’d easily have chosen to spend loads of time in Algarve, but we chose Lisbon and so far (it’s been 12 hours) we absolutely love it! Hope you guys get some rest, we know what you mean about getting tired out much easier these days, too!
